No resized gif does appear in MMBase with JAI. The strange thing is that
I
can't find this information in the MMBase docmentation. I found the
reason
on the site of Sun. There is a world wide patent of Unisys on LZW
writing of
gif's that expires in July this year. Therefore there is only a gif
decoder
in JAI, but not a gif encoder. So, at the moment you can read but not
write
gif's with JAI.

Using png instead of gif is at the moment a temporary solution, so why
not
convert gif internally to png with JAI? Otherwise we have to wait until
the
end of this year when the patent expires and there is a new JAI library.

(from burnallgifs http://burnallgifs.org/)
20 June 2003: The LZW patent expires today in the United States.
However, patents on LZW are still in force in other countries. In mail
dated Monday, 23 June 2003, Unisys attorney Mark Starr asserts that LZW
patents are still in force in Canada, France, Italy, Germany, the United
Kingdom, and Japan.

b.t.w. on http://carlit.mine.nu/~mmbase/fom-serve/cache/21.html
there is some info about why using png images in mmbase.
