What are you doing? Of course they get deleted by POP3 - that's what it
does! Use IMAP *or* POP3. One or the other. **NOT** both.
If you have two IMAP clients, both *should* be able to view the mailbox
at the same time. (Depends upon how well the IMAP client implements IMAP.)

Don't know how it works with OE.
> When IMAP actually delete the emails at the server?
Most IMAP clients deal with two states of deletion. First, we you click
"delete" or whatever in your client, the message is marked as deleted.
It remains there until "expunged" from the IMAP server. I don't know how
OE handles this.

Depends on your IMAP client. You should be able to... it's something with OE.

It all depends upon what your larger backup strategy is. Are you doing
nightly/weekly backups and then archiving them for a year? If so, yes, it
would be possible to retrieve it.
> Do I have to shutdown qmail when I performed the backup?
No.
> Next, is there a convinent way to monitor disk usage on e-smith?
Don't know if someone has made a contrib module... but you could
ssh in, login as root, and type the command:
df -k
That will show you the disk usage on your system.
