IMAP for sending???  Never heard of that.  Are you sure?  I highly, highly,
highly (add a few more "highly's") doubt that.

I think you meant to say "xxx can use the resident MTA (such as Sendmail or
one of many others) or can use its' own SMTP engine".  That would be much
more likely.
