I solved the whole thing with symlinks in the /etc/samba directories. You can leave rhe redhat RPMs in tact that way. A small drop-in in the /etc/e-smith/events/actions/ deletes all the contents of /etc/samba and creates the symlinks after.

It is much better all round if we use standard streams and avoid "e-smith" forks of base code.
