I'm experiencing no/strange functionality from a 5.1.2 server set to dial up access
with a USR external modem. I originally thought that I was experiencing a
configuration issue and posted to the general discussion board. However, in noting the
number of posts involving the same problem with USR modems and SME5.1.2, I think the
problem raises technical questions appropriate for discussion on this list.

I have a fresh install of 5.1.2 on an IBM PC350 P166 with one serial port. The UART is
16550. The port is currently configured to COM2/IRQ3 (ttyS1), but acted the same when
configured to COM1/IRQ4.

I purchased a new USR v.92 external modem and configured 5.1.2 to dial up access.
Nothing happened. /var/log/messages shows repeated occurrences of the following
sequence:

send (ATZ^M)
expect (OK)
alarm
Failed

After reading earlier posts to the forum, I ran minicom and it acted very strangely.
When it first loads, it displays and init string, then the modem lights flash, and the
program basically hangs. It comes back with an ATZ about 60 seconds later, but I can't
access any menus or communicate to the modem.

After abandoning minicom as crashed and rebooting from the console, the behavior of
the modem under the console/regular server state changed. Now, the modem comes off
hook as esmith is booting (I believe when diald is loaded) and commences the handshake
routine without dialing the number. I hear the dial tone, the handshake, and then
eventually the Bell you've-had-your-phone-off-the-hook-for-too-long sound. I turn the
modem off and on, and within 60 seconds it repeats the handshake sequence without
dialing.

Interestingly, I can boot to DOS 6.1 and run Procomm and connect to Datapac, dial my
home number, issue AT commands to the modem, etc, so it would appear not to be purely
a COM port issue.

I note that there are at least 2 other posts with virtually identical problem
descriptions on the general discussion forum, both involving USR modems, and both of
which appear to be unresolved.

Any ideas on where to start?

Thanks,

Glenn Kennedy
