Well, I just agree with Charlie Brady :
Problems are not (never ?) relevant to diald.
I've been using it since a long time on different linux distributions
and in different countries : if the filters are correct, diald behaves 
perfectly, at least from the inside network (not talking about telco 
problems), and the filters are just OK on SME. I've never seen any 
running workstation bring the line up while the night ... come on 
everyone is sleeping, let's go ! ;-)
Btw (if you thought to it), I see much more trouble coming from using 
pppd on demand-dialing mode over a standard serial link.
