My response to them is the same as to you - present the evidence if you
want rational discussion of the problem. You aren't really "reporting
problems with the dial-up" unless you provide the details.

Every time I have looked at a diald problem the problem has been found 
elsewhere. Between examination of /var/log/messages and using diald-top to 
visualise diald's activity I've always been able to identify a problem 
which was outside of diald. 

You may very well have different experience, but if so, please accurately
document the issue.

We pay per call in Australia as well. I've long been very wary of 
dial-on-demand, and believe that it should be avoided if at all possible 
wherever there are per-call costs. You'll also notice that there is a big 
warning in the User Guide about telecom charges and dial-on-demand:

I doubt that there is one. You'd spend your time better identifying the
precise problems you have and working out how to fix or work around them,
by applying, for instance, the qmail concurrencyremote tweak to control
outgoing mail delivery.
