We've run an old copy of Netscape Directory server for years just as
a global address book. Only a couple of people do the updating
but it really isn't that hard to maintain a thousand or so names.
The current version is Iplanet Directory and the cheapest way
to get it might be to buy a low end Sun box. It's included in
Solaris, but not the I386 version. I think if mine broke tomorrow
I'd try installing SMEserver on another PC and add the names as users
with no passwords just for the LDAP service. But, what I'd really
like to have is a central LDAP server holding the unix and samba
account information for all the other servers in addition to the
address book. Postfix and Sendmail can be configured to use
LDAP to direct local delivery across multiple machines.
