Are you sure that's true about the Windoze installer? I have 6GB free on a 80GB hard drive and when I delete the freenet.ini and launch freenet.jar with --config, I get it defaulting to 256M. Seems like it should have defaulted to 600M. When I installed freenet months ago, it defaulted to 256M as well.


More accurately, the windows config app defaults to 10% of free disk space. But, the windows config app doesn't get run automatically on install, and you didn't run it the second time, you used --config instead, which defaults to 256M, as you've seen.
So how do you run the windows config app?
