Kickstarter is how diaspora got $200k for their project. I think it's a useful tool. However, Freenet is quite niche - I can't imagine many people wanting to donate for the UI, unless they were already using Freenet. So I'm not sure that a kickstart page will be much more effective than just putting up a notice on the website, or in-freenet. Maybe it'll reach more people, though.
