"3.9" does not pertain to the real numbers set!
Simply to a double dimension set: one dimension for the "version" (3) and one dimension for the sub-version (9). Sometimes I add a third dimension for the sub-sub-version.

        you are right about decimal numbers. However the various usages for designating different versions of a software are more complex. Notice that very often the have more than one separator dot/point.
Example: MS Internet Explorer Version 6.0.2900.2180 ..........
 
By the way, could  version 3.9  mean 3 and nine tenths?

I know that now, but I am used to decimal numbers where 3.9 > 3.13.
Perhaps he should number his revisions of ver. 4 (whenever it may
appear) starting with 4.01 rather than 4.1.
