   Eh?  That's a pretty broad generalization to make.

   If John was referring to the mechanical filters on the 480, then
you're flat-out wrong.  They're in the IF chain, and do an excellent
job of eliminating AGC pumping, in particular.  I have both the 500hz
and the 270hz filters, and they're invaluable for making signals that
would have been dumped into the noise by the AGC usable.  Especially
on RTTY contest weekends.  ;-)

   If you mean the DSP filters - which are in the AF chain - then yes,
the software should be able to do most of the work.  Nonetheless, I've
found that the 480's NR and DNL do help in bringing very low signals
to the threshold of readability, when the software is struggling to
decode.
