Hi! I believe Mike Emmel, Attilio Fiandrotti and some others are working hard on this.
The effort seems to be centered around the Debian Graphical Installer project. AFAIK there is work to be done on GTKDFB as well as CAIRODFB (which is used by GTKDFB), but the developers would be better people to ask. One nice thing would be a proper integration of GTKDFB into GTK as an 'officially' supported backend, so that it could be more nicely/conveniently distributed (the current 'patch' system is a bit clunky to handle, and leads to problems coordinating releases/versions).
