I commited my changes that help with some window crashes this should help you with the gtk 2.8.3 version in CVS. The Debian group is backporting them to the older release for now and they already have the changes in there branch. I'm going to try to fix a lot of bugs over the holidays and see if I can get the 2.8.3 branch as stable as the older build. Then maybe we can look at the memory leaks :)
