Hi
i'm happy to see many people intersted in GTKDFB: as Richard Unger

the upcoming Etch Debian Installer is planned to include a graphical

Ok, cool. Thanks for all of the information you provided, I'm
digesting all of it now.
ATM we use GTKDFB 2.0.9 [2] since it has to be stable enough for our
needs but we plan to switch to 2.8.x GTKDFB serie as soon as its
components find a proper collocation into their respective
mainlines and
some needed rework has been done.
Ok, no problems - this was one of my next questions which was the
version of GTK DFB currently in use (or the recommended one to use).
So looks like 2.0.9 is the one to stick with for the moment.
Mike Emmel, main developer of GTKDFB, will be away for a week but he
said as soon as he's back again he will work on integrating CairoDFB
into Cairo and then GDKDFB into GTK [3].
Great.
After the graphical debian installer has been announced, many
bugreports
were reported against GTKDFB and DFB: they are reported against the
cdebconf-gtk udeb package [4] to able to track down everything later.
Also, i know a BTS exists for the GTDFB / DFB project were i think
some
bugs ATM reported against cdebconf-gtk should be forwarded to.
ATM GTKDFB 2.8.3 has to be built from sources applying some patches
[5],
but it basically works and an experimenta debian-installer ISO
based on
GTKDFB 2.8,3 is available [6].
Coool - thanks for the mini iso link - I downloaded and checked it
out - very nice.
GTKDFB, after the death of GTKFB project, is the only known (to me)
alternative to tunning GTK apps over an X server and could be a good
solutions for embedded devices/distributions like the debian-
installer,
where size matter more than performance and functionality.
Help in developing GTKDFB would be very apreciated by the whole
debian-installer team!
Sure, I agree - I'm in a similar situation of having to build a small
distro as well, and I'd really like to be able to use GTKDFB for the
GUI side of things in it. I'll keep pushing onwards here getting it
working locally, and look forward to being able to contribute in the
future. Looking forward to seeing CairoDFB and GDKDFB integrated into
GTK proper.
Cheers,
Marcus

Hi Richie,
Thanks for your response mate, much appreciated.
Are Mike/Attilio/etc on this list? or would I better off following up
with these guys on the debian-installer mailing list (or another one
elsewhere?)
Looking forward to hearing what they've got to say.
Cheers,
Marcus

Hi!
I believe Mike Emmel, Attilio Fiandrotti and some others are
working
hard on this.
The effort seems to be centered around the Debian Graphical
Installer
project.
AFAIK there is work to be done on GTKDFB as well as CAIRODFB (which
is used by GTKDFB), but the developers would be better people to
ask.
One nice thing would be a proper integration of GTKDFB into GTK
as an
'officially' supported backend, so that it could be more
nicely/conveniently distributed (the current 'patch' system is a
bit
clunky to handle, and leads to problems coordinating releases/
versions).

Betreff: [directfb-dev] Status of DirectFB/GTK 2.8?
Hi All,
Hope all is going well.
Great to see that GTK 2.8 support is being worked on with DirectFB.
I followed the instructions at: http://www.directfb.org/wiki/
index.php/Projects:GTK_on_DirectFB
to get a working GTK 2.8 under DirectFB (awesome).
I'm wondering if there's an overall status of the port? ie. what
works, what doesn't, what still needs to be done? All the usual
questions, etc. :)
Perhaps someone might be able to summarise it for me, so I can find
out where I might be able to join in and help?
Cheers,
Marcus
