Yes I don't advise trying to figure git out from the man pages.. there are plenty of intros like the X.org one that should help, after a while of playing around you'll eventually feel comfortable enough to look at the more powerful commands... I've been using git since Linus dropped bitkeeper and I never use more than 5-6 commands unless I'm doing something I shouldn't..
