I don't know whether it has or not. I've read a comment somewhere (in the CVS log or in a readme) that it hadn't been tested. However, there are lots of things in the readme that are somewhat out of date. Has anyone tried the subpicture layer (unichrome driver) and found it to work at any time? I might try finding a mailing list associated with the X driver and see if they have any suggestions.
