The answer depends pretty much from the nature and number of applications you're planning to run on your device. Running a single GTK application on top of GTK/DFB is drawbackless and allows saving ~8 megs of memory if compared to a midget gtk/x11 solution, while running a whole minimal desktop system is a completly different problem.
