Hi guys-

We have generally provided RSP's with a "post meeting" summary after ICANN
meetings. Please find following a summary from the Yokohama meetings. Josh
Elliott (who used to work for ICANN, and who now works for us) files this
report.

>Update from ICANN Meetings in Yokohama, Japan, July 13-16
>
>After nearly a year of deliberation through the Domian Names Supporting
>Organization (DNSO) of ICANN, the ICANN Board of Directors approved the next
>step in the process to create new gTLDs (like .shop, .bank, etc.). The
>Board approved an aggressive timeline starting with a Request for Proposal
>(RFP) to be published on August 1st, culminating with new operational
>registries for gTLDs in the first quarter of 2001. Here is the specific
>timeline:
>
> Aug 1, 2000: RFP posted by ICANN
> Oct 1, 2000: Application deadline for proposals
> Oct 15, 2000: Close period for public comments on proposals
> Nov 20, 2000: After Board approval, ICANN to announce selections
> Dec 31, 2000: Target date for completion of negotiations with
> selected
>proposals
> 1st quarter, 2001: New gTLD registies operational
>
>Proposals will need to be accompanied by a $50,000 application fee, a
>business plan, and policy details, among many other requirements.
>
>ICANN's at-large membership continues to proceed full steam ahead. New
>bylaws have been added as the process continues to evolve. We encourage
>everyone interested to apply for FREE membership in ICANN at
>http://members.icann.org.
>
>You can view the ICANN Board resolutions in full at www.icann.org.
>
>In other intersting news at the meetings, Becky Burr will be leaving her
>position at the US Department of Commerce. Ms. Burr has been instrumental
>in the founding of ICANN and its success to date. She will be replaced by
>Karen Rose, who has been working closely with Ms. Burr since the creation of
>ICANN in 1998.
>
>Another emerging topic disucssed in conjunction with the ICANN meetings was
>the issue of multilingual domain names. This is a big issue primarily in
>Asia, but one that we are keeping up on regularly. No real technical
>progress was made, but most of the groups who are developing solutions to
>the problem were present at the meetings, and there seemed to be relative
>agreement that standardization was of utmost importance. This is more of a
>technical issue at this stage, but ICANN will likely become involved as the
>policy issues become more relevant.
>
>Lastly, Tucows' efforts in acting as a registrar for many ccTLDs continues
>to move forward. A number of ccTLDs are in line to be integrated into the
>system beginning with .UK in early September.
>
>If there are questions about which ccTLDs will be integrated or you would
>like us to pursue a particular country, or if you have questions regarding
>the ICANN proceedings and policies and any information contained in this
>memo, please contact Josh Elliott <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>.
