Non-refundable application fee, btw.
This is just plain ludicrous. ICANN has shown clearly with this
latest meeting, and with the total gutting of the at-large membership
and directors, that it has no intention of living up to the lofty
ideals those who created this monster claimed it would live up when
they forced it upon the internet.

The ICANN At-Large membership is a farce, with the at-large membership
having absolutely no power at all now that the members of the
"interim" board (who have extended their own terms and power so many
times it isn't even funny any more) have passed further amendments to
the by-laws that will force the at-large membership to take ever
decreasing roles in the ICANN process. Originally, in the plan
approved by the DoC when they approved ICANN, the At-Large membership
was to elect one-half of the board. The Corporate and IP interests
see this as a major threat to their ability to force ICANN to accede
to their special interests demands, so they have been instrumental in
getting more and more language inserted that leaves the At-large
membership totally powerless.
I do NOT encourage people to join the at-large membership. It is a
farce, with absolutely no real voice in anything, and all it will be
used for is for ICANN to say to the world "Look, we have xx,000
members in our at-large membership, and that's were we draw our
mandate." All joining will do is to let ICANN use your name to
justify their existence.
ICANN will have to do that without my name.
