I don't think you would have had to do ANYTHING with the nameservers 
to do a transfer, really. You could have just said "transfer foo.com 
with ns1.foo.com and ns2.foo.com as its nameservers to SRS" and it 
all woulda worked. Even if it was "move foo.com to SRS, using 
ns1.stillwithnsi.com and ns2.stillwithnsi.com as DNS", it would have 
worked.

I think you made the problem much more difficult by overthinking it, 
and that's what is causing you the difficulties. Personally (and I'm 
sure most of us here agree), I've moved dozens of domains from NSI to 
SRS with varying conditions of name-servers, and all have gone 
flawlessly with no mucking about with the actual servers themselves 
at all.... ;-)
