I disagree. Yes, the numbers may look different. But look at the hoops
that Tucows OpenSRS had to go through to become an accredited ICANN
registrar with NSI. I'm just recalling off the top of my head, but I
believe that you have to show that you have about $70,000 in capital.
You have to pay out about $20,000 in fees. You have to go through a ton
of paperwork, tons of software issues, and ... to do it as well as
OpenSRS, you'll have to hire a staff of very knowledgable techies. Add on
to that a $1400 a month T1 (at the least) and a payment to NSI of about $6
for every domain you register and you've got yourself your own
Registrar. I bet that you'll want to charge more than $6 then. :)
Yes, I'm a bit ticked when a client calls me up with a quote from a
competitor for $7.50 a domain name. (he was registering hundreds of names
at once) But, I can still make money other ways.
So, if you have the capital and the expertise, you can do it yourself.
Just go to http://www.icann.org for more information. Personally, I'd
rather let someone else front the cash and do all the technical work. I
take risk in other areas, such as marketing and research. Techie work is
not my forte.
Additionally. Tucows could have just held on to their own contract and
sold domain names themselves for $30+ a year... but since they've opened
up OpenSRS, they have leveled the playing field against NSI quite a bit
and the domain name prices have fallen dramtically. Some OpenSRS
resellers sell domain names for as little as $13.50 a year. Others like
myself use them as loss-leaders for other products and services. SEE:

Right now I only have 2 types of products available that include a free
domain name. But by October 1st, I plan on having more than a dozen
webmaster related products available...each come with a FREE domain
name. Thanks OpenSRS!
