DETAGGED means that the domain is effectively on hold.

The hosting ISP requests to Nominet (guardians of the UK namespace) that the
domain be detagged (quite often this will be because the registrant no
longer wants the domain, or the ISP is unable to get payment for the renewal
of the domain).

Nominet will then attempt to contact the registrant directly on 3 occasions
to confirm that the domain is no longer wanted. The registrant then has the
option of renewing the domain directly with Nominet.

The domain will eventually be deleted, if the registrant confirms that they
no longer want it, or Nominet is unable to contact the registrant (but they
have to go through the Due Diligence procedure, to avoid later lawsuits!!)

So if a domain is detagged, it *may* at some point become available for
re-registration.

I guess it shows up as available, as the Name Servers are removed from the
WHOIS record...

Hope that helps

Alex

Subject: DETAGGED .UK domains?

Had a registration this morning for SHOPPING.CO.UK... Very surprised it was
available, and it turns out it wasn't...

Try this whois:

http://www.nic.uk/cgi-bin/whois.cgi?query=shopping.co.uk

You'll see this line:

Domain Registered By: DETAGGED

When I search availability for this domain name on my site or any other
OpenSRS site, SHOPPING.CO.UK is listed as available.

However, when I submitted the registration request for SHOPPING.CO.UK, the
OpenSRS interface tells me the domain has been "Declined by Registry".

Can anyone enlighten me on the status of a DETAGGED domain and how such a
domain responds when queried by the OpenSRS lookup?
