Yeah, it's a mess, with the potential to become a REAL mess.  'Late' is
relative... how many (unknown) contact records will I have five years from
now?  Like anything else, doing it now would be easier than doing it later.
As it is, it could take some people months to round up all the different
profiles and 'implied' handles for their own contact data.

I imagine that like a number of OpenSRS systems, it's the way it is because
not a whole lot of thought went into the design.  While not rocket science,
I can't believe that all the handle 'splitting' (is there also handle
'merging'?) and trying to match contact information to existing records is
either very developer or system resource friendly.  Since a (manageable)
handle would still be based only within the OpenSRS database, it would seem
that the complexities of dealing with different registries could still be
well hidden from users.
