First impressions are that .name is a bad joke. Who in their right mind
would want to register john5.smith.name or john.smith5.name? Oh, I know,
all of those AOLusers who are used to this kind of thing. Talk about
confusion -- yes I just finished reading the IANA report on .name at
http://www.iana.org/reports/name-report-16aug01.htm where they talk about
reducing public confusion to a minimum -- go to my website at
john5.smith.name, no not john.smith.name or john1.smith.name or ...
Then there is the fact that you would need to register a different domain
for each member of your family -- hoping that your future childrens names
are still available when they are born... Yeah, I see on the .name
website the example of jennifer.smith.name adding her children as
kidname.jennifer.smith.name, etc. No thanks, I'll sick with a 2nd level
family name domain which allows me to add each of my family members (as
3rd level names) as I see fit.
This really reminds me of the existing services out there that will rent
you a third level domain off of their second level domain.
The e-mail forwarding thing really confuses me. Are they trying to say
that the only way to use the domain for e-mail is to sign up for their
(additional cost) e-mail forwarding? And if you don't within 120 days,
they may let someone else use the [EMAIL PROTECTED] as their e-mail
address? More confusion! My website is at firstname.lastname.name but my
e-mail address is [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Okay, I now see that I can probably use [EMAIL PROTECTED]
as an e-mail address on my own server, which some people may or may not
like.
Another problem just came to mind. What happens if someone uses
[EMAIL PROTECTED] to send spam and the whole "domain" lastname.name
gets blocked/added to spam domain lists? What if I was cruel and named my
child "abuse" and registered [EMAIL PROTECTED] for them. Then they
would get all of the spam complaints for lastname.name. (I just checked,
"abuse" is not on the registries reserved name list. What about
"postmaster", "webmaster", etc? ;)
What kind of stability and reduction in confusion (i.e. the IANA report)
does all of this mess create?
