Bill, I haven't seen an OpenSRS reseller site yet which uses a truly
independent submission system. All I've seen so far are somewhat "changed"
OpenSRS clients or simply the original unchanged one. This shows that
programming for the API isn't that easy. I agree that parsing the replies
may be a bit more difficult then chunking a submission down to a given
email template. I assume, however, that an email based system would
encourage many small resellers to at least start with a complete
submission system of their own. It should also be noted that there seem to
be different reseller "models". Most on this list seem to run domain
registration as a wholesale business where they just want to have as low
contact to the domain/buyer as they can. It's obvious that they like
getting provided with a client they don't need to think about and an
automated payment collection system. We have a different concept and I
think many resellers in Europe are like us. We sell Webhosting, not
domains. When domains are registered with us it's almost always attached
to buying a server. We take the domain registration in our own format,
verify it with the client, process it and then send a success/failure to
the (new) client, process the server order etc. The client does not have
any contact to the registrar/registry. They come to us and they get it
from us. Money is collected later (not via credit card). We do not sell a
domain at $15, that doesn't make any sense to us, I could just hand them
out for free.
