This is one of those thorny issues. I agree with you in terms of trademark and ownership of common words. I don't believe that should mean that we should not be able to register .SOMETHINGs although the handling of such registration must be managed and assigned to some single entity to manage it without total chaos. Having multiple roots just wont work and still provide a sensible structure to the web as most people expect it. I know the multiple root argument has been had ad-infinitum so I wont continue after this, but anyone can see the chaos thats going on now does not help anyone...
I personally don't have a problem with a .GOD registry. If someone comes up with a fair method of assigning TLDs through a common root. Its not perfect, but perhaps something like the FCC auctioning off the airwaves...? What I have a problem with is multiple alternate roots offering the same TLD to people who have no clue why some extremely large portion of the internet will never be able to get to their site unless they can convince their customers to add DNS entries for their root. That is ridiculous. Business owners or anyone else for that matter has a reasonable expectation that their name will allow them to create a web site that people can surf to and an e-mail address that people can send mail to...with DOT-GOD at least they don't try to hide it even if they don't emphasize the difference, with the DOTGOD,DOTSEX,DOTUSA group...for $59 dollars they will gladly take your money and when the customer is done, they still don't know what hit 'em. 'nuff said...at least from me anyway...;) -bryanw HalfPriceNames Domain Registry http://www.halfpricenames.com/ -----Original Message----- From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]] Sent: Monday, November 19, 2001 12:33 PM To: Bryan Waters Cc: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: was. "Re: Born in the dot USA!". God (tm) You (tm) Sex (tm) Life (tm) Hi Bryan, I don't know of any purely capitalist countries. I live in Canada. This ain't a perfect place, but we've got a mix of philosophies to keep things running. Ownership of resources is a complex matter. As for common words, like God Love Sex Peace, etc. These words are called common words for a reason. We all use them. They are ours. Up until now, no one could own them. No one has a right to claim exclusivity over them because they are our words. Nice legacy we'll be leaving for generations to come when language that was in the public domain is controlled and owned by a bunch of different entities. With freedom comes responsibility.
