That's a hard question to answer without knowing what "something like this" is. The project has only been discussed in vague terms, with no clear explanation of what's going on. (It has nothing to do with not being part of the pilot, other than the fact that those in the pilot might have more information about the specifics of the project.) If OpenSRS is considering offering a service to register expired domain names dropped by all registrars, fine. But if the service involves re-assignment of expired Tucows-registered domain names without first deleting them at the registry level, that's not right. And I believe re-activating an expired domain name with name servers not approved by the owner is a gross abuse of a registrar's power. My view is that the registrant of a domain name is the owner and should be in control as long as the registration exists (until deleted from the registry) - or until the owner willingly transfers the registration.
