Even "On the surface", I don't think it's a valid reason. If I register a domain longer then my customer paid me to do so, do I now have the right to hold that domain hostage and require the customer reemburse me, at whatever rate I choose? -- The nice thing about standards, there is enough for everyone to have their own.
