Well, for those interested...

I simply put the transfer request through again... and this time it
(apparently) worked.  My client forwarded me a "sorry to see you go"
notice she received from Verisign, and a few hours after that I got the
"transfer successfully completed" message from OpenSRS.

Now, according to WHOIS the domain still lies with networksolutions...
but maybe I'll just chill out for 24 hours and hope that everything will
sync itself up, before I start to get paranoid again...
