Call it righteous indignation. Luckily *I* am not affected by this, but I was responding to a message that said that the new domains HAD to be purchased, and they wondered aloud why CIRA did things this way.
Nobody cares about the domains. They care about the ACCESS to their sites. SO, YES somebody IS "forcing [everyone]one to part with their .nf.ca" domains. HOW? Simple! When people thought about .nf.ca they thought about .nf.ca. That represented 100% of those people. NOW, they will ALSO think about .nl.ca! So a portion of that market is immediately lost, and it will become a larger portion over time. The domains have a viral effect. When first purchased, it is known by one person on the planet and s/he has FULL control over it. The goal, the reason for the name in the first place, is to let OTHERS know about it. When that happens, they lose control of it. To be quite frank, if this happened all the time, the domain market would probably dry up. Maybe someone would create a new domain and hijack dns servers, like NEW.NET, and say I'M not leaving! HECK, I found out one day that someone I didn't know, never even talked to, wrote a review of my site. Years later, it is STILL there! If I change the domain, I lose that link. According to alexa, that site has over 252 links. What about all the ones it DOESN'Y know? If I were selling things on that site, and it changed its domain name, that would be LOST business. BTW, I have a list of URLs that I am trying to reduce to very useful ones. It has about 600,000 urls. about 2% go bad each month. Should I just forget about any nl.ca and nf.ca? HECK, should I just forget about ca all together? I have enough trouble updating that list without somebody doing a wholesale change like this. I witnessed first hand how much trouble a major phone system was having because some government flunky decided to change the name/organization of 2 streets! THOUSANDS of people were listed improperly in the 911 system(A system to allow emergency personell to quickly find people in trouble). There was NO pattern, and NO advanced notice given.
