No offense, man, but give up the conspiracy/extortion theories. No one is forcing anyone to do anything. If you have a .NF.CA domain, keep it as long as you want. If you want a .NL.CA domain instead, "trade-in" your old one (i.e. register the new one, and let the old expire). What's the issue?
Heck, register the .CA version and give up worrying. To claim that "when people think of Newfoundland domains, they now have to think about .NL.CA and .NF.CA ... and therefore I'm going to lose half my market" is sheer nonsense. Just like I have to think about the .COM, .NET and .ORG versions of companies, right? Yeah, I can't get the hang of that either. - Colin
