I got it working on a Mac using the Compose Special Characters extension: http://www.productivityapps.com/csc.html I'm not sure if it will work in Math, though, so it might not help in this case. I spend most of my time in LO using Writer, with sporadic forays into Calc. That extension (along with the ucs-insert setting in Emacs) has made my life a great deal easier.
