I think we live in interesting times. I think the CC shape is a jigsaw and not lego as such but there are similarities? (Unless I've got the wrong shape) I have been looking at similar ideas to CC but have not found a visual way to represent it yet, Ive got a bit of a rant and an example of the table from the matrix at http://lucychili.net/au/ My idea was to make a matrix which is represented on labels of materials sold in shops and in metadata on digital information products so that people can search specifically for free stuff and can see if they stuff they are aiming to buy has a free licence or something else and choose accordingly.
I have based the model on read wrte execute unix permissions, but have mapped it to access, use, modify, distribute, inherit to try and represent the attributes which information licencing has and then no, restricted, conditional and free for the kinds of access that are possible. I thought this kind of labelling would make it easier for people to buy stuff and know what theyre getting. Still working on a good label system. Wanted to use the matrix to map any licence not just cc or one source of licenses. I do share a concern that the words commons and freedom are being used to represent things which do not further the ideas of commons and freedom. Making sure that we are careful in our use of the words freedom and commons and are explicit about what that means for us, eg the right to participate without prejudice might be the best way to make it clear when the words are labelling something which does not match? Just some thoughts Janet _______________________________________________ Discuss mailing list [email protected] http://freeculture.org/cgi-bin/mailman/listinfo/discuss
