It's not totally clear what data that last.fm collected that was given to the RIAA. At the mimimum, I'm guessing its IP address and user names. Which is what they use for their RIAA suits.
there's also a c) collecting data because users like to chart what they've listened to over the years at different time periods, also noticing trends, etc. last.fm also refers users to Amazon, iTunes, etc. so I think that's part of their business model as well. Last.fm ostensibly has the rights to do such a thing, but it's still worrying.
