Yeah, it seems like a huge hit piece at this point. Apologies for not linking to the TC article with more skepticism, as this is the first time I've seen them get something so wrong.
Regardless of what happened, it would be nice for the RIAA to deny doing this too, though for some reason, I this is very unlikely to occur. Also, a sobering experience for those of us who enjoy last.fm for precisely the reasons it could be used against us.
