We could make use of the MusicBrainz [1] data set to look up tracks and pull
useful data out for clients to use; that way, we wouldn't be burdened to try
to duplicate Last.fm's awesome dataset (MusicBrainz has done quite a good
job already).

Other Last.fm functionality can already be duplicated using other services.
For example, a service such as Sad Steve [2] which organize music clips from
across the web could be used to put a little "Preview track" button next to
the track in the listing, while tracks which can be ascertained [3] to be
available for free via some liberally licensed service could show a "play
full track" button next to them.
