I agree that virtual classroom type lesson formats might help as an alternative
to people who are unable to join a session in person. However, one caveat is
gaging the learner's involvement along with myriad of technical problems that
unforatuntely happen more often than not that can derail the lesson flow. Have
virtual lessons been tried at any center ?

Subject: Re: [discuss] Hybrid carpentry lessons?

Training individuals at different times sound most challenging to address. The
live-coding workshop atmosphere is really crucial for learners to feel
comfortable asking questions or asking for help. My worry is that any sort of
individualized or self-learning experience is consequently going to result in
gaps. If it's possible to get trainees to workshops held at local conferences,
etc. that might be a workaround to having a workshop specifically for everyone
on the grant.

re: online resources
RStudio has some interactive tutorials set up using their cloud service and the
`learnr` package. They run entirely within the web browser, so might be
interesting to look at. https://rstudio.cloud/learn/primers

re: DataCamp
I think their lessons are top-notch, but wouldn't recommend sending any
business their way, for solidarity reasons:

Hello carpentries friends.

I am a librarian that often teaches carpentries lessons. I am collaborating
with a researcher that is thinking about developing a data management training
for the new grad students and postdocs in a research grant. A lot of the
content that she is hoping for matches lessons in the carpentries: spreadsheet
best practices, R, python, version control. However, because of the
characteristics of the grant (several institutions, 5 years, several grad
students and postdocs hired at different moments), it is not realistic to
organize software/data carpentry workshops, the students will not coincide in
time and space. A great part of the value of a carpentry workshop is the
personalized interaction with instructors and helpers in the moment, of course.
But since this is not an option for her team, I was wondering if somebody has
adapted carpentries lessons to a more “hybrid” format, something that will not
be an in person workshop, but that will be more than just a link to a lesson
that the student must follow on their own.
I will also be interested to hear if you know of other resources that would
allow students to get similar training than the training they would get in a
carpentry workshop, without the in person element. The instructor mentioned
DataCamp, which I am not very familiar with.
As always, thanks for your help!

Clara
