Of course I meant 128M - typo due to phone or flashback to compiling assembly on my 2nd multi-user timeshare system? ;-) (I am more proficient in Assembly than C - ha ha!)
I also saw old sun blogs talking about shrinking OpenSolaris, but I have not seen a recent distribution with a small footprint. 256MB is too big for my embedded systems, unfortunately. Solaris 10 ran in 128MB with gnome. I need a distribution with: - RS-232 serial support (recent sunray firmware drops RS-232 support?) - X server (don't need gnome, olvwm would be awesome) - USB WiFi, USB Ethernet, USB Serial support would help - WiFi would be great, but not a requirement on embedded platforms - ZFS would be awesome, but only a dream for embedded platforms Thanks - Dave On Tue, Nov 22, 2011 at 2:02 PM, Jerry Kemp <[email protected]> wrote: > In late 2009 on the OpenSolaris appliance-discuss list, there were a > group of people who where running Solaris on the Soekris net5501 platform. > > http://soekris.com/products/net5501.html > > Here are a couple of helpful links that were in that thread (redirected > from the original sun.com blog links). > > http://blogs.oracle.com/jtc/entry/framework_to_help_create_small > > http://blogs.oracle.com/jtc/entry/opensolaris_on_the_smallest_system > > To quote one poster from this 2009 thread, "The headless version uses up > about 60MB RAM when executing, leaving lots of room for customization." > > Jerry Kemp > > On 11/22/11 11:26, Alan Coopersmith wrote: > > On 11/22/11 09:12, DavidHalko wrote: > >> Hi Linda, > >> > >> We are looking for a 64bit SPARC distribution and a tiny 32bit x86 > >> version (128K RAM or smaller) - don't know if either will be in-scope. > > > > I don't think you'll ever get any Solaris based OS down to 128k - even > > the oldest versions I remember had multi-megabyte minimum memory needs. > ------------------------------------------- illumos-discuss Archives: https://www.listbox.com/member/archive/182180/=now RSS Feed: https://www.listbox.com/member/archive/rss/182180/21175430-2e6923be Modify Your Subscription: https://www.listbox.com/member/?member_id=21175430&id_secret=21175430-6a77cda4 Powered by Listbox: http://www.listbox.com
