OK, there's been a lot of very useful information but I think I am
beginning to get a rough shape of what I should, or could do. If I
understand Matthias and Andrew Rae correctly, then hardware RAID 1 is
unnecessary and even undesirable as ZFS will do job for me.

So I was originally thinking of having 3 mirrors and then creating a
single storage pool using them, but as Andrew has clarified, the
entire pool would be akin to the worst performing vdev and say one of
the mirrors failed, then it would be the same as if all of the mirrors
failed (hope my paraphrasing isn't too inaccurate).

I can see why that would not be recommended so I may stick to three
separate mirrors (2TB Music and Videos, 1TB Applications and Games,
500GB personal files and miscellaneous), much like I do now. So am I
talking through my backside if I were to suggest getting say a 120GB
SSD and having the OS installed to that (still thinking OpenIndiana)
and then configuring a ZIL and L2ARC on there also (Sandisk sell a
toggleNAND drive for the same price as many 60GB SSDs)? I don't think
I need a DUMP as I'm not planning on a great deal of experimentation
and would likely not understand the output anyway.

I'm still processing a huge amount of information right now and many
thanks to Jesus for the link to his article, I'm in the process of
reading it now. However, if I can clarify the crux of what I am going
to do, then I can plan ahead accordingly and my experiments will
reveal more usable data, so I appreciate all of the feedback that I
have thus far received.

Regards, Andrew
