Thanks, the software is both a framework for web applications and a web application itself, a full featured collaboration and more, all written in java/html5. We use to run version 4.x on our XStreamOS based servers running all the backend infrastructure for a thousand users in our zone based cloud. We are open sourcing version 5, and an alfa demo is here: https://webtop5.sonicle.com login / pass : demo-en / english for english, or demo-it / italiano for italian At the moment we have chosen AGPL, that looks more tailored to web apps. My question is: beside opening the source to non-profit people, how much are we protected against people forking and maybe redistributing and packaging it as their own product? Do we have any chance to protect us from this, but still be considered open source? I think you can?t go wrong with the MIT 3 clause license. The CDDL is also not a bad choice if the code is for illumos or solaris. Years ago, I selected two optimal licenses: The CDDL ist the best reciprocal (copy left) license The Apache 2 license is the best academic license Later this selection was also published by people from opensource.org Whether you select a copy left icense or an academic license is the main thing to do.
