Well the only thing I can say don't be. There is a lot of stuff going on in the space of illumos (more on a hobby side of things maybe).
Yeah linux might be the turnkey kind of solution for Serivce X where everything comes pre packaged but that is mostly bad in real production scenarios. In production you need to know what you are running and how you have installed it otherwise you will have some sleepless nights. And don't get me started on Kernel Stability...... Many Sleepless nights with fibrechannel multipath and kernel crashing. Also from Experience the ZFS ARC issue he mentions is vastly underplayed in his blog post. I have to reboot my Machine every month because ZFS arc has eaten all my memory. And it's categorized as Application memory. The kernel does not free that. If you want some excitement for Illumos I suggest this talk: [1] /ranting Greetings Till [1] https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=coFIEH3vXPw On 02.10.2017 12:29, Sriram Narayanan wrote: > http://www.brendangregg.com/blog/2017-09-05/solaris-to-linux-2017.html > > I'm working on something that will benefit the Illumos community, but > reading this post has deflated my enthusiasm :( > > -- Ram > *illumos-discuss* | Archives > <https://illumos.topicbox.com/groups/discuss/discussions/T6060bd522bd42b4d-Mf19364b320bd205fb28bab86> > | Powered by Topicbox <https://topicbox.com> ------------------------------------------ illumos-discuss Archives: https://illumos.topicbox.com/groups/discuss/discussions/T6060bd522bd42b4d-M991b07a47e378feff9cbe6ef Powered by Topicbox: https://topicbox.com
