But from my point of view as sysadmin and my opinion I have to agree 100% with the guy's like Andre and Till, I also followed Brendan and have much deep respect for him, true I think it's also sad that he choose for getting the Linux Road where I came from, but also respect his chose. But on the other side these days the hype are Linux and Cloud but for how long ... What gonna happen when Linus Torvalds decide to quit because of his age and want to go on pension or some different scenarios ... Why is Linux taking all the baggage and crap from early day's with it till today ??? Why not Listening to people how already experience all these issues ? But then still UNIX is designed and developed after it's design but Linux is evolved to that what today Linux is ... So Linux will never become what illumos is and will become after all the new innovation's talk in this mailing list. I have talk a lot with my customers specially now when Oracle decide to stopping developing on Solaris, Those customers don't want to go over to Linux, They want to have the same stability features and all the stuff what comes with illumos, the questions remains they want to have a support contract which they don't really need because they have a support contract with our company who deliver all the services, and we can always fall back to the community. Also to the Cloud it's just not possible, the amount of data is way to big to send over the INTERNET, they always gonna stay on premise. True they think about solutions like Cloud on premise managed by Oracle or others but also there we see a lot of trouble, some customers went over to EXADATA and now are coming back to Solaris or looking to illumos because of the performance, networking, easy management etc ... It's a heavy job to convince those company's but slowly they start to get it and understand it that's all about FOSS and UNIX, in the mean time those company already standing open for it and asking POC to setup so they can start testing and feeling comfort with it. And I think that's a point you have to go is getting you customers comfort feeling back !!! Also we are in meeting with Datto which is a Backup Disaster Recovery and those guy's having a great solution and taking it from a different sight which I really appreciate, only they running it on ubuntu. We spoke and ask to them why not using illumos this application is jelling to use server OS => illumos We already made a second appointment with some technical people because they standing open to this idea and to discuss this, I really hope we can convince them to switch over and using illumos as OS. So I think If you are working on something don't let take you down because a lot of people are starting to wake up and looking for solutions like illumos and you features ... Thank you very much. Yeah linux might be the turnkey kind of solution for Serivce X where everything comes pre packaged but that is mostly bad in real production scenarios. In production you need to know what you are running and how you have installed it otherwise you will have some sleepless nights. And don't get me started on Kernel Stability...... Many Sleepless nights with fibrechannel multipath and kernel crashing. Also from Experience the ZFS ARC issue he mentions is vastly underplayed in his blog post. I have to reboot my Machine every month because ZFS arc has eaten all my memory. And it's categorized as Application memory. The kernel does not free that.
