This is a new EU law valid form mai 2018 about datasecurity and
dataprocessing, valid at least in Germany from then on. Among others it
demands the technical implementation of datasecurity in a state of the
art manner. For personal or sensible data this must mean data encryption
at least in the EU - otherwise a stolen disk/server can mean a huge
amount of money as a compensation for any damages or indemnity.
Currently Illumos lacks this feature so it may be that this is a
criteria that rules out Illumos based systems in various use cases in
favour of Solaris or BSD/ZoL solutions with disk based encryption.
What is the state of native ZFS encryption in Illumos - derived from
Datto/ZoL as encryption moves from a nice to have to an absolutely
mandatory feature then?
