I don't see how you can even *think* about design without being aware of the limitations of your medium. You may try to push past those limits but you've got to have some awareness of the limits.
I think it is nonsense to say that knowing the limits keeps you from pushing the limits...but I think it is crazy to say that you should design with no awareness of limits at all. Design is holistic -- the more you know and understand the better!!
