I don't "hire by degree", and I promise you that I never will. There are a lot
of good candidates in our field with non-traditional educational backgrounds,
and a lot of academically-anointed people who can't design worth a tinker's
damn. Managers in all disciplines should hire based upon the qualities and
qualifications of the candidate, and degree is only a small part of that
equation.

As for salary, a PhD will *ask* for more money, but he'll only get it from me
if he's the best candidate. And if I can afford it. So there's a cautionary
note there...don't incur so much graduate school debt that you price yourself
out of the marketplace.

Most people hire by degree now anyway, so view it as a business
decision and go for it. You'll add a fifth of your salary again and get
first place in the cheese line at company parties.
