This is a common problem in many disciplines.. The same thing happens
with developer (interface and application) .. there's no room to grow
unless you move into management.

This problem also means that you never end up with designers or
developers who are really senior in experience and expertise because
those people all end up getting "promoted" into managerial positions,
and the cycle continues because the next level of designers/developers
doesn't have anybody to mentor them properly and they all aim to
become managers..
