In the last century, US corporations have developed a billion dollar PR
industry to promote desire driven, consumerist economy. Watch BBC
documentary 'The Century of the Self' by Adams Curtis for one informed
account [1, 2]. Incidentally the public relations industry hires interaction
designers as well [3].

The movement for the sustainable living is essentially anti-consumerist,
therefore swaying public opinion will not be easy unless you have a billion
to pay PR to produce campaigns for sustainable living. Perhaps you could
come up with a good viral marketing scheme. For instance, an exciting widget
for a social networking sites (Orkut, Facebook, MySpace)?
