One thing I've noticed in this thread is that a lot of people assume that selection by keyboard only takes the first character for random access into the list. In both IE7 and Firefox 2 (I just tested both) you can type multiple characters to get to a spot in the list. I don't know what this affects as far as the real question goes, but I do know it would apparently make dropdowns a little easier for some.
