One of the designs-to-avoid postcards in the IxDA handouts from Cooper Interaction Design is a very simple and compelling picture of an open door leading to a brick wall.
A page consisting solely of the text "Coming soon" is a brick wall. A more acceptable alternative is to put the coming soon text beside the label that will eventually be a live link leading to a page with real content.
